25 October

Setting sail from Québec City

Québec City, the capital of French-speaking Canada, is one of the North American continent's most beguiling cities. The pretty old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a joy to behold; the cobbled streets and church spires are enclosed within the old city walls, and many of the buildings date back to the 17th century. In January and February the Winter Carnival, one of the world's biggest winter festivals, brings colour and celebration to lift the hibernal gloom, while in summer the streets are filled with musicians and street performers in period costume.

Don't miss

For fantastic views, go to the Terrasse Dufferin, on the clifftop high above the St Lawrence River, then take the funicular to the Old Lower Town.

26 October

Canada: Saguenay

The stunning Saguenay fjord is the fourth largest in the world, and the only fjord in North America navigable by cruise ship. The point where the fjord meets the colder waters of the St Lawrence river is rich in krill, which makes this a great destination for whale watching.

Canada: Magdalen Islands

The windswept Îles de la Madeleine, or Magdalen Islands, are strung across the Gulf of St Lawrence, to the north of Nova Scotia. The islands are known for their spectacular rust-red cliffs, deserted beaches and friendly inhabitants, and it’s also a popular spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Canada: Charlottetown

Charlottetown, the charming provincial capital of Prince Edward Island, occupies an important place in Canadian history: it was here that the conference which led to the creation of the Canadian Confederation took place in 1864. The city also has a great culinary scene, making use of the island’s bountiful seafood and fresh produce.

Canada: Sydney

Sydney is the only real city on Nova Scotia’s beautiful Cape Breton island, a former steel and coal town that is reinventing itself as a cultural and culinary hub. The revitalised waterfront area is particularly appealing, and there are some interesting Loyalist-era buildings in the city’s North End district.

The natural harbour at Halifax is the second largest in the world after Sydney, and this charming city has a proud maritime heritage. Take a stroll along the historic waterfront, delve into the vibrant arts scene or explore the beautiful coastal scenery of Nova Scotia.

Ways to make it better
    • Auberge Saint-Antoine, Québec City

Where to stay in Québec City

Chateau Frontenac is tempting, but we choose the Auberge St Antoine.

    • Montmorency Falls, Québec City

      Recommended private tour

Get out of the city and you are in Big Nature – Foret Montmorency is a good destination, especially with a wildlife guide.

    • The Plaza Hotel, New York

Stay a few more nights in New York

There are just so many hotels to choose from, but we recommend The Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue next to Central Park.

      See New York in style

Take to the air on a helicopter sightseeing trip of Manhattan Island, the best way to see the city’s skyline.
