Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Europa 2, acclaimed by the noted Insight Guides (formerly Berlitz Guide) as being the best ship in the world, brings a fresh and contemporary look to cruising, whilst offering a varied and stimulating experience on board which we think it is hard to match.
Our Insight
Let's not beat around the bush, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is a German company, and the first language on board is German. But if you can get over that hurdle, you have a treat in store! Totally committed to operating MS Europa 2 (500 guests) bilingually, Hapag-Lloyd have created a unique cosmopolitan cruise experience, and one which we thoroughly recommend.
This is a company that responds promptly to the individual, so you will feel nurtured and welcomed from the start on board a Hapag Lloyd cruise. They are passionate about creating a very special experience for each guest, and are particularly attentive to non-German speaking guests to ensure their time aboard is very special.
The décor is Nordic minimal - fresh, clean and infused with light throughout. So whether in your spacious suite or relaxing on deck, or even travelling in the elevator (!), you will enjoy extensive sea views and an al fresco welcome.
We love the range of dining alternatives, with a choice of seven different gourmet restaurants, all offering relaxed open seating and available to book at your leisure.
A huge spa with extensive facilities is very appealing, and entertainment, as befits a multi-lingual ship, focuses on the visual, alongside an excellent choice of musical options. There are great children's facilities too.
Whilst the not insubstantial fares on board a Hapag Lloyd cruise do not include alcoholic drinks or gratuities, there is an excellently priced wine list, and none of the seven dining venues come at an additional charge.
Itineraries, particularly during the winter, are beautifully crafted, and with a fleet of zodiacs on board you can explore away from the crowds.
Hapag-Lloyd are committed to environmentally responsible cruising and have implemented numerous initiatives across their fleet, including banning the use of heavy fuels and switching to marine gas oil. Optimised hull design on their newer vessels helps to reduce fuel consumption by 18% and shore-to-ship power can be used when docked to help further reduce fuel consumption. Catalysts reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by almost 95%, advanced water management means zero sewage is disposed at sea, and ballast water is treated to stop flora and fauna being introduced to foreign ecosystems. This is in addition to the use of electric Zodiacs where possible, extensive recycling of onboard waste, and smart management of energy usage (e.g. LED lighting).
To protect wildlife whilst cruising Hapag-Lloyd work with the International fund for Animal Welfare, specifically to help protect endangered Bryde's whales, and they support The South Georgia Heritage Trust, whose efforts help to preserve the native flora and fauna on South Georgia and in the surrounding waters.
Hapag-Lloyd are also members of AECO (the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators), who support responsible, environmentally friendly and safe tourism in the Arctic, and were co-founders of IAATO (the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) who advocate for and promote safe and environmentally responsible private sector travel to the Antarctic.
