Our insight
Cruising from the UK is in many ways the perfect stress-free way to travel - in fact it can be so relaxed that some of our clients joke that they leave their brains in the boot of the car when they park to board the ship!
There are downsides of course - the seas around the UK are notoriously lumpy, whether you are crossing the Bay of Biscay, the North Sea or the Atlantic, and whatever the time of year, the weather can be disappointing, as we Brits know all too well.
But, convenience aside, there are hidden advantages of cruises from the UK as well. For instance, it's often easier to get travel insurance on round Britain cruises, a great consideration if your health is poor.
Certain cruise lines cruise regularly out of the UK with an excellent range of cruise choices, both close to home and further afield. Luxury cruise lines, it has to be said, tend to have fewer ex UK choices.
Top itineraries for ex UK cruises are the Baltic, Norwegian Fjords, the Canary Islands, or into the Mediterranean. But even a less glamorous round Britain cruise can be fabulously eye-opening and enjoyable. There are also occasional opportunities, during the winter months, to join longer cruises such as World Cruises and Grand Voyages.
Our tips
A private tour to Tower Bridge's Towers, high-level Walkways and new glass floor, then down to the Engine Rooms, is rather special.
We love historic Walletts Court, just ten minutes outside Dover but feels like another world – cosy, welcoming, and great food too.
Stay at the Pig in the Wall, stylish with great food. Very small so book early.
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard features a number of historic ships as well as some great interactive exhibitions introducing you to the city’s long and rich history. A magnificent day out.
Elegance, history and the renowned White Star Service are the key features of a cruise on board what Cunard call the ‘Most Famous Ocean Liners in the World’. The brand is widely recognised as the truly ‘British’ line, and this is something that the now-American owners have been very careful to respect. We think they have done a good job; the Cunard style remains unmistakeable.
This is a truly unique way to experience Scotland. The unpretentious little Hebridean Princess, inextricably linked to the Western Isles, is loved by all who sail on her, while the recently acquired Lord of the Highlands brings the same intimacy and charm to the inland waters of the Caledonian Canal.
Whether you choose one of the classic smaller R class ships, the purpose built slightly larger O class, or the new A class ships, you can expect the same levels of Oceania delivery, with a huge emphasis on excellent food, and fascinating worldwide itineraries which can be combined to create lengthy trips.
