Voyage Itinerary

5 August

Setting sail from Dover

White Cliffs Country is a fascinating region, one packed with history and natural beauty. We think there is no sight like that of the stunning cliffs rising from the sea, topped by the fortifications of Dover Castle, and surrounded by lush green countryside. But the nearby area is also packed with charm, and not so further afield are captivating pretty villages, fascinating towns such as Sandwich (one of the original Cinque ports), and of course Kent's glory, Canterbury with its magnificent cathedral. A final thought must go to the many castles including Deal, Walmer and the magnificently photogenic Leeds Castle.

Don't miss

Perhaps our favourite restaurant in the South is The Sportsman at Seasalter, an extraordinary isolated pub on the bleak estuary coast. A Michelin Star, fantastic food and astonishing value.

France: Dunkirk

7 August

France: Boulogne-sur-Mer

Boulogne is France’s biggest fishing port, so this is a great place for a seafood lunch, and the waterfront Nausicáa is one of the world’s largest aquariums. There are also some interesting historic buildings within the 13th-century walls of the Haute-Ville, perched on a hill overlooking the rest of the town.

France: Dieppe

Dieppe takes its name from the Saxon word for ‘deep’ thanks to its fine natural harbour, and was a key port during the 16th and 17th centuries, later becoming a popular seaside resort. In 1942 the Nazi-occupied city was the focus of a disastrous Allied raid, commemorated at the Memorial du 19 Août 1942 museum.

9 August to 10 August

France: Caen

Caen was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, and the beautiful Abbaye aux Hommes is his last resting place, though only a thigh bone remains. Caen was heavily damaged during the Second World War, and there are several D-Day sites nearby; learn more at the city's excellent Memorial Museum.

11 August

France: Cherbourg

An important naval base and major commercial port, Cherbourg is the gateway to the many attractions of Normandy, including the Bayeux Tapestry and the beaches where the D-Day landings took place. Cherbourg’s excellent Cité de la Mer maritime museum is also well worth a visit.

Arriving in Portland

The windswept Isle of Portland is connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach, which curves west for 18 miles along the Dorset coast. The island is famous as the home of Portland stone and is rich in bird life, while just next door is the resort town of Weymouth, with its pretty Georgian harbour.

The ship

Hebridean Princess

Capacity:
48 Guests
Crew:
38 Staff
Style:
Like a cosy and comfortable pair of slippers, Hebridean Princess envelops you the moment you step aboard. It feels like your best friend's welcoming Scottish home - with food and drink to match.

We know of no ship quite like this one; a tiny little gem, dedicated to Scotland and all things Scottish, this Princess is fit for a queen!

What we love

A single ship with just 48 guests and in operation for only nine months of the year - hardly viable in the modern day, you would think - and when you step aboard you will also feel as if you have been swept into a bygone age, when kindness was key. A one word descriptor? Charm, perhaps. But that only begins to cover what is special about Hebridean Princess.
