Full solar eclipse over mountains and sea

The spectacle of a total solar eclipse, when day turns into darkness for the briefest of moments, is set to appear in Europe during summer 2026; it will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. A year later, another total solar eclipse will occur, appearing in Spain and Morocco, and continuing across parts of North Africa and the Middle East, with the best viewing locations in Egypt near Luxor where totality will last over six minutes - predicted to be the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century. Here are the best cruises offering the chance to witness the solar eclipse in August 2026 and 2027...

Capturing the eclipse requires preparation: a solar filter is essential, manual focus is recommended, and a tripod helps ensure sharp shots. Rest assured, expedition teams and experts on board will guide guests to prime viewing positions in time for the spectacle.

There is surprising variety in the itineraries on offer, from expedition cruises venturing beyond the Arctic Circle, to classic ocean voyages in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, and these voyages are sure to be popular so it pays to plan ahead. These are the best cruises to witness the eclipse in 2026 - on which availability is limited - and 2027.

Solar Eclipse Cruises 2026 & 2027

Seabourn's Solar Eclipse Voyages

Seabourn's shorter 2026 eclipse sailings are sold out but some availability remains on their longer Baltic departures on Ovation such as the 43-day Copenhagen to New York sailing on 1 August, or join the ship in Dover on 8 August for 36 days, featuring expert talks and themed events on board.

Alternatively, opt for warmer climes in 2027 with Seabourn's 14-day cruise on Ovation on 23 July for an island-hopping sojourn through France and Italy before ending in Tunisia.

See the Solar Eclipse with Cunard

No less than three of Cunard's ships will be positioned under the eclipse in August 2026, including a 14-night adventure on Queen Mary 2 that will sail among the fjords of Norway before crossing the North Sea to Iceland, with an overnight in Reykjavík on 12 August to view the eclipse before finally a transatlantic crossing to New York.

For something a little warmer, new ship Queen Anne will sail round-trip from Southampton on a week-long voyage on 9th August 2026 docking at La Coruña for the solar eclipse, while Queen Victoria will sail round-trip from Rome for a two-week Mediterranean voyage, calling in to sun-soaked Spanish and French ports and docking in Tarragona for the eclipse. In 2027 Cunard's Southampton round-trip on the Queen Victoria departs on 23 July 2027, positioned in Tangier for the eclipse.

Experience Ponant's Solar Eclipse Cruise

If you're keen to sample the French chic of Ponant's ships, why not opt for one of two Lisbon-round trip voyages in 2027? (2026 is now sold out). The departure on Le Boréal (30 July) is in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, with Senior Geologist Emeritus at the National Air & Space Museum (NASM) Jim Zimbelman on board, or Le Lapérouse (31 July), both of which include viewing the eclipse at sea between Lisbon and Málaga.

Solar Eclipse Cruises on Windstar

Windstar now has a second voyage taking in the solar eclipse following the incredible popularity of their sell-out Iceland voyage on board Star Legend. The 'Treasure Troves of Corsica & Sardinia' itinerary has very limited availability on board the intimate 148-guest Wind Spirit, a week-long voyage taking in the delights of the Mediterranean from Rome to Barcelona on 6 August 2026 aiming to witness the total solar eclipse following a day spent in Mahon, Menorca.

Wind Spirit's small size and yacht-like feel is perfect for enjoying a summer jaunt in the Med, and this year she will undergo the first phase of a multi-million dollar refresh taking place across the entire Wind Class fleet. Or, in 2027 sail on Wind Surf on 27 July, visiting Greece and Malta on an Athens round-trip.

Witness the Solar Eclipse in Luxury on Regent

Ultra-luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises also offer several sailings in 2026 and 2027 to view the eclipse, complete with themed cocktails, eclipse glasses and open-air dinners, alongside the line's all-inclusive excursions, and expert speakers who'll provide insights and commentary; choose from two ex-UK sailings to Copenhagen on Mariner (31 July), or to Reykjavik on Voyager (12 August).

Or - though check with us as availability is low - the Reykjavik to Oslo cruise departs on 1 August on the stunning Grandeur, or sail from Paris to Barcelona on Navigator on 12 August. Alternatively in 2027, Grandeur will sail from Barcelona to Rome on 29 July to witness the eclipse at sea.

AmaWaterways: See the Solar Eclipse in Luxor, Egypt

Finally, one of our favourite river cruise lines AmaWaterways have an Egypt solar eclipse river cruise on the AmaLilia which was launched on the Nile in 2024, joining the AmaDahlia which began sailing in 2021. Departing on 29 July 2027, the cruise includes private tours to all of Egypt's most iconic sites, as well as viewing the eclipse in Luxor, where totality will last the longest at an incredible six minutes.

Solar Eclipse 2026 & 2027 Expedition Cruises

Some very limited availability remains on board AE Expeditions' Greg Mortimer (departing 2 August) and HX Hurtigruten's MS Spitsbergen (departing 2 August), as you explore the wild remotes of Svalbard, sail the dramatic fjords of East Greenland, and witness the eclipse from the observation deck.

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions also offer a Reykjavík to St John's (Newfoundland) cruise on 9 August on the National Geographic Explorer, combining witnessing the eclipse in the Denmark Straits with exploring the beautiful southern fjords of Greenland and wild coast of Labrador in Canada via kayak and Zodiac as you watch for polar bears and whales. The line also offers a chance to witness the 2027 eclipse with their 28 July departure on the little National Geographic Orion that includes the Azores' otherworldly volcanic landscapes and Spain's legendary Alhambra, positioned for the solar eclipse over the Strait of Gibraltar.
