Cruise Advice

Best winter Mediterranean cruises

Published 22nd of June 2026 | By Alex Loizou

Travelling outside peak season is continuing to grow in popularity. While the weather may not always be perfect, the benefits more than make up for it: lower fares, quieter ports of call and seeing the Mediterranean in a completely different light, away from the intensity of summer heat and crowds.

Cruise lines are also able to build stronger relationships with local partners during the quieter months, securing the best guides and ensuring that excursions are exceptional. This benefits their Mediterranean departures year-round.

Here are some of the best winter Mediterranean cruises for 2026 and 2027.

Windstar Cruises

Destinations such as Italy and Spain take on an entirely new character outside peak season. Mundy's Melina experienced this recently on Windstar's Star Seeker in December on a Malaga round trip:

"I've never experienced Spain with so few crowds, and I loved it. The temperatures were perfect and sightseeing was fantastic. Coupled with returning each day to the luxuries of Windstar made my Christmas cruise a memorable and different experience that I'd recommend to all."

Stand-out itineraries include January voyages between Venice and Rome, calling at the beautifully preserved walled city of Dubrovnik, one of our favourite Mediterranean ports. For slightly warmer temperatures, Windstar's March Spain sailings are ideal, including Valencia, historic Cartagena and overnight stays in Barcelona and Málaga, all without the usual crowds.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent offers a selection of excellent winter Mediterranean cruises on a variety of 7, 10 and 12-night itineraries. Ports such as Barcelona, Rome, Venice and Athens give a whole new perspective in winter, while more unusual calls include Tunis, with its narrow lanes, packed old medina and handsome colonial buildings.

It is all experienced alongside Regent's signature luxury on board, as well as a choice of included shore excursions in each port.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea offers an excellent range of winter Med sailings until early December, before resuming again in late February. On board their intimate ships, guests can explore destinations such as Malta and Sicily, with overnights in charming cities like Seville.

Athens round-trip itineraries feature highlights including Santorini's iconic domes, ancient ruins in Rhodes and the extraordinary archaeological site of Ephesus in Turkey, all far more pleasant away from the crowds and heat. On Silver Dawn, Silver Moon, Silver Nova and Silver Ray, guests can experience the S.A.L.T. programme to get to the heart of the food and wine culture of the region.

Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys sails the Mediterranean through the cooler months, with itineraries running October to November 2026 and again from December 2026 into January 2027. Western Mediterranean sailings sit alongside routes through Greece and Turkey, where quieter ports and softer light make the shoulder season worth considering.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania's newest ship, the 1,200-guest Allura, sails the Mediterranean through winter on itineraries between Barcelona, Rome, Athens and Istanbul. Most voyages run nine to 14 nights, with varied routings calling at ports including Cadiz, Seville, Melilla, Tangier, Tunis and Volos.

Why choose a winter Mediterranean cruise

The best winter Mediterranean cruises offer a different experience to summer sailings. Temperatures are milder, making sightseeing more comfortable. Ports that feel overwhelmed in July and August become manageable, even peaceful. Fares tend to be lower, and ships less crowded.

If you value seeing places as locals experience them rather than at the height of tourist season, winter in the Med makes sense.
