Vanuatu: Champagne Beach

Champagne Beach is a stunning stretch of perfect white sand on the east coast of Espiritu Santo, the largest of Vanuatu’s islands. The beach is named after a bizarre natural phenomenon, in which gas escaping from volcanic rocks on the sea floor causes the water to bubble and fizz at low tide.

Solomon Islands: Santa Ana

The lush island of Santa Ana, also known as Owaraha, is home to just three villages, and visitors are usually welcomed to the island with traditional songs and dances. You will find a few stalls where you can buy locally-made souvenirs, and you can also snorkel in the surrounding lagoon.

Solomon Islands: Honiara

Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands and the nation’s only real port, situated on the largely unspoilt island of Guadalcanal. Reminders of the famous Second World War battle that took place here can be seen all over the island, as well as under the water at the fantastic dive sites off the north coast.

Solomon Islands: Ghizo

Ghizo island is small compared to its neighbours, but it’s also home to the Solomon Islands’ second biggest city, which is somewhat confusingly called Gizo (sounds the same, different spelling). The open air market is a great place to find unique souvenirs such as shell jewellery, and there is excellent snorkelling and diving just offshore.

Looming over Rabaul is smouldering Mount Tavurvur, an active volcano that buried much of the city when it erupted in 1994, and which still periodically belches smoke and ash. Rabaul is also an appealing destination for history buffs, with several World War II sites still scattered with rusting wreckage.

Palau: Koror

Scattered across the South Pacific, several hundred miles to the east of the Philippines, the Republic of Palau is a stunning archipelago of lush, jungle-coated islands. The crystalline turquoise waters of the surrounding lagoon are a diver’s paradise, while on land you’ll find colourful bird life, prehistoric paintings and remnants from the Second World War.

The little island of Boracay is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including the aptly named White Beach. If sunbathing doesn’t appeal then there are plenty of more active pursuits on offer, including diving, kiteboarding and windsurfing, or you can take a trip out on the water on one of the pretty ‘paraw’ boats.
