During the British colonial era, frenzied building took place, with strong European influences - British, but also Portuguese and French. The City of Palaces boasts palatial mansions on every corner, most sadly now in various stages of impressive decay. The city boasts numerous museums and libraries, as well as number of lavish administrative buildings and grand hotels, clubs, statues and memorials - all remnants of its colonial past. Alongside these, vibrant temples provide an exciting contrast.
