Setting sail from Manila
Manila is a sprawling conglomeration of soaring skyscrapers, faded colonial facades and ramshackle slums, and it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But if you have the stamina and an inquisitive nature, there is plenty to be enjoyed in the Philippines' boisterous capital, including the world's oldest Chinatown, the historic walled city of Intramuros and the shopping malls of Makati. Grab some respite in Rizal Park, or explore the remarkable Chinese Cemetery, where Manila's wealthiest Chinese citizens are laid to rest in lavish mausoleums, complete with chandeliers, kitchens and air-conditioning!

Once just a sleepy fishing village, Donsol is now a major tourist hotspot thanks to the large population of whale sharks resident in the bay. The best time to see these gentle giants is between February and May, and even if you don’t want to swim with the sharks you can usually see them from your boat.

The island of Bohol is best known for the Chocolate Hills, a bizarre landscape of over 1,000 conical karst hills that turn brown in the dry season. Other attractions include beautiful white sand beaches and the Tarsier Sanctuary, where you can see one of the world’s smallest primates, the Philippine tarsier.

Malaysia: Sandakan
Sandakan is the former British capital of Borneo, and is still home to a few old colonial mansions, but most visitors are here for the fantastic Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Other nearby attractions include Gomantong Caves, the Kinabatangan River and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.

Palopo is the gateway to the highland region of Tana Toraja, famed for its stunning scenery and fascinating tribal culture. Toraja houses are instantly recognisable by their curved, boat-like roofs, and are often adorned with the skulls of water buffalo that have been slaughtered during the Toraja’s elaborate funeral ceremonies.

The Alor Archipelago is a fantastic destination for snorkelling and diving, much less well known than Raja Ampat and Komodo. On the main island, also called Alor, you can learn about the traditions of the Takpala indigenous people and visit the Museum of a Thousand Mokos in Kalabahi, with its collection of bronze kettle drums known as mokos.

The city of Kupang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara province, and lies at the southwestern end of Timor island. It’s more of a transit hub than a tourist destination, although there are some interesting markets, and there are some nice beaches nearby - just watch out for the crocodiles!

Arriving in Darwin
More of a large town than a city, Darwin is less about what’s contained within the city limits and more about the huge expanse of wild landscape that’s outside it. Closer to Jakarta than Sydney, the city really does feel remote in its tropical perch.

Visit Litchfield National Park and embark on a crocodile-spotting boat trip, where you can see these intimidating, prehistoric beasts jump clean out of the water for a meal.
