East Africa & Indian Ocean Small Ship Cruises

East Africa & Indian Ocean cruises - Kids in Zanzibar

East Africa's wildlife coast meets the scattered islands of the Indian Ocean. This is a region of coral reefs, remote archipelagos and some of the most rewarding safari countries on earth. Small ships connect the destinations that would otherwise require multiple flights: Mozambique's quiet coastline, Tanzania's spice islands, the Seychelles, Madagascar and Mauritius. Many itineraries pair naturally with a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari.

Our Insight

Highlights of a luxury East Africa and Indian Ocean cruise

The Seychelles are the heart of Indian Ocean cruising. Granite islands rise from turquoise water, with beaches that rank among the most beautiful anywhere. The inner islands around Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are the most visited, but small ships reach the outer islands and atolls where the snorkelling is exceptional and the beaches are empty. Aldabra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's largest raised coral atolls, is home to giant tortoises and extraordinary birdlife.

Madagascar is a destination unto itself. The wildlife is unlike anywhere else on earth, with lemurs, chameleons and endemic species found nowhere else. Cruise itineraries typically cover the northwest coast around Nosy Be, combining time on the water with forest walks and village visits. A Mauritius extension before or after adds contrast: volcanic peaks, botanical gardens and the colonial architecture of Port Louis.

Tanzania's coast brings Zanzibar, with Stone Town's spice markets and layered Swahili history. Further south, Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago and Quirimbas islands are quieter still, with coral reefs, dhow sailing and a pace that feels genuinely untouched.

East Africa also serves as a gateway to safari. A Kenyan or Tanzanian safari before or after your cruise is one of the most rewarding combinations we arrange. The Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are all within reach, and we can build a programme that moves from savannah to ocean in a single journey.

The small ship difference in East Africa and the Indian Ocean

Small ships reach islands and anchorages that larger vessels cannot access. In the Seychelles, this means the outer islands and quieter atolls beyond the main tourist circuit. Along the East African coast, small ships call at Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago and Madagascar's northwest harbours where there is no cruise infrastructure for larger vessels. The snorkelling, diving and wildlife excursions that define this region all work better from a smaller ship, with some offering Zodiac access to remote beaches and reefs.

Luxury East Africa and Indian Ocean cruise itineraries

  • 7-14 nights Seychelles: Dedicated Seychelles itineraries, often roundtrip from Mahé, exploring the inner and outer islands. Some extend to Aldabra for wildlife-focused sailings.
  • 14-21 nights Madagascar and Mauritius: Madagascar itineraries typically cover the northwest coast around Nosy Be, often paired with Mauritius as a start or end point.
  • 14+ nights East African coast: Itineraries combining the Seychelles with Tanzania and Kenya, or focusing on Mozambique's islands. These often connect with safari extensions.
  • Repositioning voyages: Longer sailings crossing the Indian Ocean, connecting Cape Town with Mauritius, the Seychelles or onward to Asia. These include sea days interspersed with island calls.

When is the best time to cruise East Africa and the Indian Ocean?

The Seychelles can be visited year-round, with April to May and October to November particularly good for diving. Madagascar is best from April to November. Timing depends on which destinations your itinerary covers.

Travel tips and FAQs for East Africa and Indian Ocean cruising

Can I combine a cruise with a safari?

Yes, and this is one of the most exciting ways to experience the region. A Kenyan or Tanzanian safari pairs naturally with an East African coast or Seychelles cruise. The Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are all within reach. We can build a programme that moves from savannah to ocean.

How far ahead should I book?

Further than you might expect. Indian Ocean itineraries are seasonal and limited in number. The best cabins on Seychelles and Madagascar sailings can sell out six to twelve months ahead, particularly for the outer islands and Aldabra.

Is the Seychelles good for snorkelling and diving?

Exceptional. The waters around the inner and outer islands offer some of the best snorkelling in the world, with coral reefs, whale sharks (in season) and abundant marine life. Small ships with Zodiac access reach the quieter sites.

What about the Maldives?

The Maldives appear on some Indian Ocean itineraries, but the geography makes it less suited to cruising than island-hopping by seaplane or speedboat. If the Maldives are a priority, a resort stay may be a better fit than a cruise.

Is Madagascar worth including?

Absolutely. Madagascar's wildlife is found nowhere else on earth. The northwest coast around Nosy Be is the most accessible by cruise, with lemurs, chameleons and endemic birdlife. It pairs well with Mauritius and the Seychelles.

What should I pack for an East Africa and Indian Ocean cruise?

Light, breathable clothing for warm days. Sun protection and a hat. Reef-safe sunscreen for snorkelling. Comfortable walking shoes for island excursions. Binoculars for wildlife. Smart-casual for evenings on board.

Are there expedition-style options?

Yes. Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd offer an expedition approach in this region, with a focus on wildlife, snorkelling and Zodiac exploration. This suits travellers wanting a more active, exploratory experience rather than a classic cruise.
