As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we've been speaking to some of the key players in the luxury cruise industry.

Peter Shanks is Managing Director UK and Ireland at Silversea, and joined the company in 2018. Peter's distinguished career in travel includes 13 years at Carnival Corporation, four of which were spent leading Cunard as President and Managing Director.

Q: Describe your company in no more than 50 words...

A: Silversea is the world's leading ultra luxury cruise line. We have been at it for 25 years with a fleet of 8 ships - and 5 new ships set to join the fleet over the next 3 years. For us it is all about the destination - we travel to over 1,000 places each year. We go to places I did not know were places!

Q: What is your proudest moment as it relates to your company?

A: I think right now and over recent months, in these very difficult circumstances, the way that our Crew and Officers have looked after guests and each other has been remarkable. They are very special people, much loved by our guests, and we are so proud of everything they do.

Q: Tell me something about yourself that most people don't know...

A: The reason I am in travel is that my stepfather was airline pioneer Sir Freddie Laker, and his approach to business and travel has always been my inspiration. He was ahead of his time.

Q: Tell me what, in your opinion, is the one most significant thing that makes your cruise line different from its competitors?

A: Our remarkable expedition cruises. Whilst Silversea started as a classic luxury cruise company, since 2008 we have been taking guests to the heart of very special places like Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galapagos - life-changing experiences surrounded by nature, wildlife and guided every step of the way by our Expedition Teams. Because we have been doing this for over 10 years, we stand out for the expertise of our maritime and expedition teams.

Q: What is the next big thing to come from your company?

A: Silver Origin has recently joined the fleet to sail in the Galapagos - but the next big and exciting thing will be the arrival of Silver Moon later this year. She will be the most elegant ship afloat, and we are all looking forward to her new SALT programme - Sea and Land Taste. Wherever she is in the world we will take guests right into the heart of the destination to visit local farms to see how local produce is grown, and then back on the ship guests can learn how to prepare that food in our Salt Lab or experience it from our chefs in the Salt Kitchen Restaurant.

Q: Why do you love Mundy Cruising and what do you think is the secret of our 50 years of success?

A: I love Mundy Cruising for the marvellous support you have given Silversea over the last 25 years and the many guests you have brought to Silversea. And the secret of your success is without doubt your people Edwina. Right from yourself down to every member of your team - it's your knowledge, expertise and passion that creates your success. And all of us at Silversea would like to thank you for that support over 25 years, to congratulate you on your first 50 years and wish you all the best for the next 50 years…
