Luxury Rhine, Main & Moselle River Cruises

Rhine river cruises - Uniworld River Queen

The Rhine is one of the great rivers of Europe, flowing 865 miles from the Swiss Alps through France, Germany and the Netherlands, passing vineyards, fairy tale castles and picturesque little villages. A Rhine cruise will also often include one of its main tributaries, such as the Main, which passes through Frankfurt and Nuremberg, or the Moselle between Koblenz and Trier.

Our Insight

Highlights of a luxury Rhine, Main & Moselle river cruise

These rivers offer the greatest variety of any European river cruise region. The Rhine delivers the headline moments: sailing through the Gorge with castles on both banks, arriving into Amsterdam or departing from Basel with the Alps behind you, walking through Strasbourg where French and German culture sit side by side, stepping off in Cologne with the cathedral visible from the water.

The Moselle adds wine tastings in villages where vineyards climb almost vertically from the river. Towns like Bernkastel and Cochem feel like they have barely changed in centuries. The Main takes you into Franconia, where baroque palaces, smoked beer, half-timbered towns and a strong sense of local identity make for a genuinely different experience.

The variety means you can return to this river system several times over and find something new each time. If you want culture and cities, the Rhine gives you Cologne, Strasbourg, Amsterdam and Basel. If you want wine and quieter scenery, the Moselle is hard to beat. If you want something less well-known and distinctly German, the Main takes you to places most visitors never see.

Why luxury matters on a Rhine river cruise

The Rhine is the busiest river in European cruising. Dozens of operators sail these waters and the difference in experience is significant.

On the Rhine more than any other river, a luxury operator means better docking positions in popular ports, fewer guests per ship, stronger guiding on excursions and a noticeably higher standard of food and wine. The better lines also offer more choice in how you spend your time ashore: guided walks, cycling along the river, vineyard hikes and private tastings rather than a single coach tour.

Luxury Rhine, Main & Moselle river cruise itineraries

  • 7 nights - The classic Rhine cruise between Amsterdam and Basel, with stops in Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Strasbourg and the Rhine Gorge. This is the route most first-time river cruisers choose.
  • 10-14 nights - Longer itineraries adding the Moselle (Koblenz to Trier via Cochem and Bernkastel) or the Main (from Mainz upstream through Würzburg and Bamberg towards Nuremberg). These combinations give you a more varied experience than the Rhine alone.
  • 14-15 nights Amsterdam to Budapest - The longest option follows the Rhine, crosses to the Main via the Rhine-Main-Danube canal and continues down the Danube. The full breadth of European river cruising in a single journey.
  • Themed sailings - Christmas market cruises run in late November and December. Spring sailings take in the Dutch bulbfields in late March and April.

Luxury cruise lines sailing the Rhine, Main & Moselle

This is the most widely sailed river system in European cruising, and all of our luxury river cruise partners operate here. Each has its own approach to ship style, excursion programming and what is included in the fare. On a river as busy as the Rhine, the differences between operators become very visible: the quality of docking positions, the size of excursion groups, the standard of food and wine and the flexibility you are given to explore on your own. Your Mundy consultant can help you match the right operator to what matters to you.

When is the best time to cruise the Rhine, Main & Moselle?

Late April and May are particularly good, warm enough to enjoy the deck, green vineyards coming into leaf and fewer crowds. June to August is peak season with longer days, though the Rhine Gorge and Amsterdam can feel busy. September and October bring harvest colours and wine festivals. Late November and December are the Christmas market season. March and early April offer the Dutch bulbfield season.

Travel tips and FAQs for Rhine, Main & Moselle river cruising

Is the Rhine a good first river cruise?

It is one of the best. The 7-night Amsterdam to Basel route covers 4 countries, a range of cities, wine regions and the Rhine Gorge in a single week. Flights from the UK are short, the ports are easy to explore on foot and the pace is manageable. Along with the Danube, this is the river we recommend most often as an introduction.

Which direction should I cruise the Rhine?

Both directions work well. Amsterdam to Basel is more popular, sailing upstream with the Rhine Gorge in the middle. Basel to Amsterdam gives you the Gorge towards the end as a finale. Downstream sailings can be slightly faster as the current assists. There is no wrong choice.

How does the Rhine compare to the Danube?

The Rhine is more varied in landscape and more focused on wine, food and small towns. The Danube is stronger in grand capital cities like Vienna and Budapest. Many clients enjoy both, often starting with one and cruising the other a year or two later. The Amsterdam to Budapest route combines both in a single journey.

Can I combine the Rhine with the Moselle or Main?

Yes. Itineraries of 10 to 14 nights regularly include the Moselle (turning off at Koblenz to cruise to Trier and back) or the Main (continuing from Mainz upstream through Franconia). These combinations provide a quieter, less well-trodden character that contrasts well with the Rhine.

What are the Rhine Christmas market cruises like?

Christmas market sailings run from late November through December. The ship docks in towns with festive markets, and you walk straight off into the stalls. Cologne, Strasbourg, Rüdesheim and Nuremberg have particularly well-known markets. The atmosphere on board is seasonal too. These sailings are extremely popular and book early. Pack warm layers, gloves and a hat.

What should I pack for a Rhine river cruise?

Comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets and vineyard walks. Layers for spring and autumn. Light clothing for summer with something warmer for evenings. Smart-casual for dinners. Binoculars are worth bringing for the Rhine Gorge, where the castles are best viewed from the deck.

Is cycling available along the Rhine?

Several operators offer complimentary or guided cycling excursions. The Rhine, Moselle and Main all have well-maintained riverside paths, and on flat stretches you can ride ahead and meet the ship at the next port. The Moselle valley path is particularly scenic.
