Setting sail from Cairns
Cairns is a buzzing tourist hub, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. A snorkelling trip out to the reef is the most obvious excursion to take here, but other options include riding the Skyrail cableway over the rainforest canopy or swimming in the croc-free saltwater lagoon.

Australia: Cooktown
Cooktown is a small place with a big history, named after Captain James Cook, who beached his ship the ‘Endeavour’ here in 1770 after it was damaged on a nearby reef. It’s a remote and sleepy town, and the seafront statue of Captain Cook is the main sight worth seeing.

Australia: Port Douglas
The upmarket resort town of Port Douglas is situated to the north of Cairns, a picturesque spot where rainforest meets reef. Soak up the sun’s rays on beautiful Four Mile Beach, explore the ancient Daintree Rainforest and stunning Cape Tribulation, or take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef.

Australia: Townsville
Sunny Townsville is a great introduction that everything that Queensland has to offer, sandwiched between palm-fringed beach and rugged outback. It’s a friendly and walkable city, with a fascinating museum and an aquarium that gives you a taste of the Great Barrier Reef.

Australia: Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsundays are blessed with some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, lapped by calm turquoise waters. The archipelago consists of 74 mostly uninhabited tropical islands, sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef, and the main draw is the phenomenal snorkelling and scuba diving.

Australia: Mooloolaba
The wonderfully named Mooloolaba stretches along a beautiful golden beach on Queensland’s idyllic Sunshine Coast, and it’s a popular destination for a weekend escape from Brisbane. The seafront Esplanade is the place to be, lined with cafés, boutiques and upmarket restaurants.

Brisbane has plenty of shopping malls and, with great weather, a fantastic café culture. Amongst the steel and glass skyscrapers are some interesting historic buildings, and with plenty surrounding the city there’s enough on offer to make for an interesting short stay.

Australia: Newcastle (New South Wales)
The port of Newcastle, just to the north of Sydney, is the second oldest city in Australia. Historically associated with convicts and coal mining, Newcastle is reinventing itself as a hip post-industrial city, with plenty of cool bars, restaurants and cultural attractions. It’s also the gateway to the Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s most famous wine regions.

Culturally sophisticated and fashionably hip, Melbourne combines edgy street art with gold rush era architecture while offering excellent restaurants and top museums. We love the upmarket beachside neighbourhood of St Kilda, an ideal base to explore the city, or you could spend a few days seeing Victoria's other attractions, such as the beautiful 12 Apostles along the Great Ocean Road, or tasting the excellent wines of the Yarra Valley.
