Setting sail from Singapore

Singapore is one of the world's richest cities, with a standard of living to match, and in recent years it has moved on from its image as a sterile, overly officious nanny state to become one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the region. Singapore's heritage as an important trading post means that there is a real cultural mix, with four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Step away from the gleaming towers and you'll find yourself transported into another world amongst the intoxicating streets of Chinatown and Little India.

Our tip

Food is a passion, almost a religion, in Singapore. So plan ahead, ask the locals and make sure you don’t miss out – street food or super-fancy, either is great.

Arriving in Honolulu

If the word Honolulu makes you think of deserted beaches and dusky maidens, think again! Despite its remote location in the North Pacific, Honolulu is busy busy, in particular the boisterous, touristy Waikiki beach. If you prefer to get away from the crowds, tour the rest of the island, or choose one or two of the other islands in this volcanic and contrasting island group for a change of scenery and a completely different pace. Asian influences are strong here, as you might imagine - the perfect stopping off point en route from the Far East to America.

Don't miss

If you are staying in Maui, get up before dawn to drive almost 10,000 feet above sea level to see the magnificent Haleakala sunrise.

Oceania Insignia - Pool deck
Oceania Insignia - Toscana
Oceania Insignia - Penthouse Suite

Small enough to operate fascinating port-intensive itineraries, but with the space for dining options, comfortable accommodation and more, sister ships Insignia, Nautica, Regatta and Sirena are for many the perfect size.

What we love

These four boutique style sister ships carry just 684 guests apiece, with a comfortable, relaxed country house style and plenty of intimate corners. We love the alternative restaurants - Oceania is rightly renowned for great food - and the pretty little library up on deck 10.

Ways to make it better
The Fullerton hotel, Singapore

Our favourite hotel in Singapore

So many wonderful hotels. We like a lot of them, but our choice is the Fullerton.

Eastern and Oriental Express

Leave Singapore in style

If you’ve got time and the dates work, take the Eastern and Oriental Express train to Bangkok.

Four Seasons Hualalai, Hawaii

Where to stay in Hawaii

Very difficult to choose from the fantastic resort hotels on offer, but we think the Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island edges in front.

Bus tour of Kualoa

Recommended tours in Hawaii

If you grew up on a diet of Hawaii Five-0 (we can hear the music now!), then take the tour!
