Setting sail from Puerto Caldera
Puerto Caldera is a major port on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, about an hour and a half from the capital, San José. Caldera itself is an industrial port with little to detain you, but the nearby city of Puntarenas is a popular beach destination, with a nice seafront promenade where you can relax with a drink or enjoy a seafood lunch. Other local attractions include the fantastic flora and fauna of the Carara Biological Reserve and beautiful Tortuga Island, a great spot for snorkelling.

Nicaragua: Corinto
The port of Corinto has limited tourist appeal, and most cruise visitors will use it as a jumping off point for day-trips to nearby León. This charming city, founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1524, is full of beautiful colonial churches and home to some excellent museums and galleries.
18 February
Nicaragua: San Juan del Sur
The beach town of San Juan del Sur is a popular hangout for surfers, and it’s a nice place to spend some time relaxing. If you’re looking for a more immersive cultural experience then it’s worth taking an excursion to the beautiful colonial town of Granada, an hour and half away on the shores of Lake Nicaragua.

Costa Rica: Playa Herradura
Playa Herradura was just a sleepy fishing village until the arrival of Marriott’s sprawling Los Sueños resort transformed the area in the 1990s. The town is surrounded by national parks, and a boat trip on the Tarcoles river is a popular option, with the chance to spot wildlife including scarlet macaws, crocodiles and iguanas.

Costa Rica: Quepos
The little town of Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park, a nature-lover’s paradise that’s home to monkeys, iguanas and the reclusive three-toed sloth. The area around Quepos also boasts some of the best beaches in Costa Rica, and the town itself has some nice restaurants.
