The Spinnaker Tower gives you a fine perspective on the area with stunning views from the top, and an interactive introduction to local history, including the Mary Rose wreck and Nelson's Victory. You can visit the house where Charles Dickens was born, and learn more about D-Day and Operation Overlord.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard features a number of historic ships as well as some great interactive exhibitions introducing you to the city’s long and rich history. A magnificent day out.

United Kingdom: Liverpool
Few British cities can match the historical and cultural significance of Liverpool. The famous docks have been transformed in recent years, and are now home to the Tate gallery and a museum honouring the city's most famous sons, the Beatles.

Tresco is the second largest of the Isles of Scilly, privately owned and best known for the famous Abbey Garden. Founded by Augustus Smith in the 1830s on the site of the old Benedictine Abbey, this extraordinary subtropical garden is home to thousands of exotic plant species.

Falmouth has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, and you can learn about the town’s seafaring heritage at the excellent National Maritime Museum. There are some lovely pubs, cafés and seafood restaurants here, and it’s also a good base for exploring Cornwall’s south coast.

The windswept Isle of Portland is connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach, which curves west for 18 miles along the Dorset coast. The island is famous as the home of Portland stone and is rich in bird life, while just next door is the resort town of Weymouth, with its pretty Georgian harbour.
