As he grew older and continued to indulge his passion, he maintained that nothing could compare with the exhilaration of sailing the open sea under full sail - and this is what he wanted to introduce to a larger number of people. So in partnership with a talented team, he designed the first new clipper ship in more than 100 years. His first ships, fourmasted barkentines Star Flyer and Star Clipper, were launched in 1991 and 1992 respectively, each carrying 170 guests. Ten years later the magnificent fivemasted Royal Clipper, with a mighty 42 sails, joined the fleet.
The Star Clipper vessels welcome back a loyal band of regulars, passionate about sail, as well as sailors, conventional cruisers, and people who would never ever consider a cruise! So everyone really. What they love is the relaxed and laidback style, the close connection with the sea, the opportunity to watch the skilled crew, the tiny ports of call, and the friendly fellow guests.
Exciting news has just been released that the company has started building a fourth ship, the Flying Clipper, which will be a five-masted, square rigged barque, to be launched in 2018, carrying 300 passengers, measuring 8,770 tons and powered by more than 6,350 square meters of sails.
We are also delighted to learn that the Star Clipper will operate a winter season out of Phuket, sailing to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore from December 2016 to April 2017 for the first time since March 2010. There are two Thailand itineraries, northbound and southbound, as well as seven departures that either begin or end in Singapore.
