8 of the best Christmas cruises in 2022

Cruise Advice

What are you going to be doing on Christmas Day this year?

Here are eight of our favourite alternatives to the traditional slumping in front of the Christmas specials - why not plan it now, and make this a winter to look forward to?

1. Swim with sea lions

Play in the surf with sea lions and marine iguanas as you explore the Galapagos on board the lovely Silver Origin. You will see amazing scenery, and get close up to the fearless fauna on land and in the water. An 11-day exploration of these extraordinary islands can be combined with a couple of days in Ecuador's lofty capital, Quito, and you could also tick Machu Picchu off your list, with an exciting side trip to Peru.

2. Snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef

On Regent Seven Seas Explorer's cruise from Singapore to Sydney departing 12 December 2022 for 17 nights, your Christmas Day call is at Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsundays, the 74 pristine islands in the north of Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. Back on board, Explorer's spacious accommodation and great dining options guarantee a luxurious and relaxing break.

3. Plan for Vietnam

Seabourn Encore leaves Singapore on 23 December 2022 on a 16-day journey to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, so as you sail the Gulf of Thailand with your feet up on Christmas Day, you can plan your busy days ashore in Bangkok, Saigon, Hue and more, interspersed with R&R on the beach and lazy days afloat enjoying Seabourn Encore's unique ambience and welcoming service.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

4. Go whale watching in the Caribbean

Join Ritz-Carlton's lovely new yacht Evrima in San Juan on 18 December 2022 and you will spend Christmas Day in stunning Dominica, the Nature Island, with its rugged mountains and volcanoes, rainforest and black sand beaches. There is so much to choose from, but one great option would be to go watching for sperm whale in the deep bays of the west coast.

5. Look for emperor penguins in the Weddell Sea

Join Scenic in Buenos Aires on 20 December 2022 then fly to Ushuaia to start a 16-night Antarctica adventure on board Scenic Eclipse, which takes you deep into Antarctica to the ice choked Weddell Sea, to gasp at the extraordinary scenery and watch the amazing wildlife. You may even get to see an emperor penguin with an optional helicopter excursion to Snow Hill Island.

6. Find the magic of a traditional Christmas

Embrace the magic of a traditional Christmas on the Danube, exploring the Christmas markets in Budapest before settling on board to visit four countries - Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany - decked in holiday finery with glittering Christmas trees, bells pealing from cathedral towers and children dressed as angels singing Christmas carols.

7. Enjoy a yachtsman's paradise

Join SeaDream II in Charlotte Amalie on 20 December 2022 and you can look forward to a Christmas Day spent pottering around the pristine beaches of the British Virgin Islands. Clamber through the extraordinary boulders of Virgin Gorda known as The Baths, then explore the hidden bays and water-level caves of Norman Island.

Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

8. Explore the wilderness on Antipodes Island

When you join Ponant's Le Soléal in Dunedin on 14 December 2022, you are starting a journey to discover the wild and untouched beauty of New Zealand's Fiordlands and Subantarctic Islands, an itinerary crafted in partnership with National Geographic, which includes Fiordland National Park, the Snares Islands, Macquarie Island and more, for amazing scenery and wildlife.
