Jamie Loizou looks at European River cruising

Formed in 1927, Australia Pacific Touring, or APT have, for the last 15 years, been using their touring experience on the waterways of Europe and beyond with their very own fleet of seven modern, custom-built river ships.

It is these custom built vessels that set APT apart from existing river cruise product on the market. Six of the seven sisters are identical carrying 148 guests, the oldest of which, ms Amadagio, was launched just four years ago. Boasting excellent space and with all the facilities you might reasonably expect onboard, the ships include three outdoor deck areas, a whirlpool, swimming pool, three lounges, a library, fitness centre and sauna as well as a massage, hair and beauty salon.

We are really excited about is APT’s latest innovative river ship, the ms Amabella, set to launch on 9 May, 2010. MS Amabella is a modern, spacious vessel carrying 162 passengers. In designing this ship, APT have built a larger vessel, at the same time limiting the capacity. As a result you’ll enjoy a huge amount of personal space on board and an extremely high staff-to-guest ratio.

The most significant point of distinction is the accommodation. Entry-level cabins are among the largest of their kind at 170 sq ft, and over 80% of all suites feature a Juliet balcony – which helps to maximise floor space and still offer fresh air and riverside views. All accommodation benefits from deluxe queen-size bed (or twin beds); flat-screen TV; computer & complimentary internet access; fully-equipped ensuite bathroom; spacious wardrobes; personal safe; personal climate control; laundry, pressing and daily turndown service; and sitting area with table and chairs.

Twin Balcony Suites on the ms Amabella incorporate an outside balcony which is a rarity in the world of river cruising. For the ultimate in spaciousness, the 350 square feet Owner’s Suites also feature a full-size bath and a lounge area for entertaining. Guests in these suites will enjoy additional benefits such as complimentary room service, fine wine and fruit platter on arrival, and €100 per person shipboard credit. .

Included within the cruise fare are return airport to ship transfers, all meals, complimentary teas and coffees throughout the day, wine and beer with dinner, as well as gratuities and port charges. On all departures, there is an included Signature Experience which enables guests to experience local culture rather than merely observe it. Small group shore excursions are included in the price and led by friendly local guides.

The seven APT sisters navigate the Danube, Main, Moselle and Rhine on itineraries ranging from 8 days for a Danube cruise all the way to 22 days for a comprehensive Rouse to Trier journey. It is worth noting that it also operates ships is France on the Rhone, Portugal on the Duro and the Russian Waterways.

As APT is an Australian company, you can expect your fellow guest to be a mixture of Australians and Kiwis with a smaller percentage of Europeans. Dress onboard is fairly informal during the day and smart casual come the evening.

A great introduction for first time river cruise passengers is APT’s 8 day Legendary Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest which starts from £1,725 per person and includes return flights from your local airport, 7 nights onboard in a twin window suite with return airport to ship transfers, all meals, unlimited drinks with dinner, gratuities and port charges.

We will be onboard ms Amabella in the coming months, so watch this space for a full report. In the meantime, if you would like more information, or to order a brochure please call us.
