Jamie Loizou reports from Silver Shadow…
I boarded Silver Shadow in Hamburg. As I was accompanied to my suite by a stewardess, unaware that I had undergone the process of actually checking in, I had an apology that I wasn’t greeted on arrival with a glass of Champagne and a selection of canapés, “our on board policy has changed”, she continued, “it was felt that after the stress of travelling people prefer a bottle of Champagne and canapés in the comfort of their own suite”. Personally, I couldn’t agree more. Particularly after a long flight, feeling jaded and grubby, you are desperate for the tranquillity of your private suite
The suites are beautifully appointed, with tasteful, thoughtful décor, a vast amount of storage space with a walk in wardrobe and enough space under the bed to store even a large suitcase. A suitcase, I might add, which was on my bed ready to be unpacked on my arrival. The Veranda had space for two loungers and a table, ideal for breakfast, or a drink on a hot afternoon – unfortunately the weather wasn’t conducive to this, however I’m sure if Silversea could have controlled this they would have done. The bathroom had a good sized tub, separate shower and dual basins. There was also a selection of Bvlgari toiletries. My stewardess offered me an additional choice of Acqua Di Parma and Neutrogena, she also asked if I had a preference for a particular spirit which swiftly appeared in my fridge. Shadow has also recently changed its beds to Sealy mattresses… incredibly comfortable.
As a small ship Silver Shadow simply cannot offer the array of public rooms that the larger luxury ships have, but this adds to her charm and creates a more intimate experience. The Bar is a great location for pre-dinner drinks and afternoon tea is served in the Panorama Lounge by white gloved stewards with traditional tier cake stands. The perfect place to spend a few hours reading and watching the world go by on a sea day is the Observation Lounge. The Spa at Sea offers an excellent array of treatments at great value, especially at current exchange rates. An alternative or possibly a complement is the small but perfectly formed gym, offering personal training programmes and a range of classes. The show lounge is a comfortable space and the entertainment although very low key was excellent. We were privileged to be treated to a virtuoso performance of trumpet playing by a musician who has performed with Paul Anka and the Elvis of the Valleys, Tom Jones. The evening was made even better by an impromptu performance and some “music biz” anecdotes in The Bar an hour after his show. Fernando, Shadow’s jovial Cruise Director greeted me with a hearty “Good morning Mr. Loizou” less than 24 hours after my embarkation.
The food in the Main Dining room was, as I anticipated, outstanding, and it was relaxing to dine at a time and in the company which suited me. The Terrazza offered an amazing daily breakfast and lunchtime buffet – not that you were allowed to actually carry your plate! This was simply a more informal way of enjoying a delicious meal. Certain dishes were also cooked to order such as my morning omelette and lunchtime pizza. In the evening as an alternative to the Main Dining Room, The Terrazza specialises in Italian fare, echoing Silversea’s heritage. The highlight was Le Champagne which is Shadow’s other dining option. This Relais and Chateau restaurant offers fine dining and an excellent selection of wine. There is an additional cover charge of $30 per person for this. The wine is from a specially devised list to match the cuisine on offer and these wines are charged over and above the all-inclusive rate. I’m not too sure that this is in keeping with an all-inclusive produce, however, it was a wonderful experience and I would recommend this at least once on any voyage.
Silver Shadow offers the perfect haven for those wanting to sample exciting port- intensive itineraries. Wonderful accommodation, excellent levels of service and good quality dining combine to make her special. Her smaller size works to her advantage, creating a special intimacy and allowing access to ports large ships cannot negotiate. Perfect for those wishing to socialise and those craving privacy she is the answer for anyone demanding quality in every department.
