Setting sail from Barcelona
Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia, is one of our favourite ports of call. From the warren-like medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic to the fantastical modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudí, from the dizzy heights of Mount Tibidabo to the golden sands of Barceloneta, there's never a dull moment in this most beguiling of cities. Take a stroll along the Ramblas, soak up the wonderful art of Picasso and Miró, or watch Lionel Messi work his mesmerising magic at the Camp Nou. Barcelona is truly a city with something for everyone.
For the ultimate boozy lunch head to Can Paixano, also known as La Xampanyeria, where local residents, office workers and the odd adventurous tourist crowd around the bar and tuck into sandwiches washed down with Cava.
Spain: Palma de Mallorca
Mallorca is renowned for its beaches, ranging from big, bustling resorts to small, secluded coves. The island interior offers ruggedly beautiful scenery and quaint little towns, while the charming capital, Palma, boasts an attractive old quarter dominated by the imposing Gothic cathedral.
The little fishing village of Cassis is one of Provence's hidden gems, with a delightful little harbour where you can enjoy ‘bouillabaisse’, the famous seafood dish that was invented here. Cassis is also a base for boat trips to explore the picturesque limestone coves and inlets (known as ‘calanques’) that shape the surrounding coastline.
Renowned for its casino, its Grand Prix and its oligarch-friendly tax policies, Monte Carlo is glamour and hedonism personified, with a price tag to match. This little principality enjoys a lovely setting, the villas and penthouses tumbling down the hillside towards the sweeping blue expanse of the Mediterranean.
France: Saint Tropez
Ever since Brigitte Bardot put Saint Tropez on the map with the seminal ‘And God Created Woman’ in 1956, this diminutive fishing village on the French Riviera has been a magnet for the international glitterati.
Arriving in Cannes
Few ports conjure up images of glitz and movie star glamour quite so readily as Cannes. Even if you find yourself unmoved by the ostentatious displays of wealth on show along the Croisette, where multi-million dollar yachts bob in the azure waters, you'll still find this stretch of the Côte d'Azur to be rich in natural beauty. May is when the glitterati roll into town for the Film Festival, but there's still plenty to divert you the rest of the year; Le Suquet, the old quarter, merits exploration, and the tranquil Îles de Lérins, just off the coast of Cannes, make for a relaxing day trip.
Le Suquet – this quarter which overlooks the old port is a maze of narrow streets leading up to the 12th century Tour de Mont Chevalier. Enjoy great views from the ancient ramparts.
Your home from home
True clipper ships, these beautiful 4 mast vessels reflect a proud seafaring heritage in their elegant sails, warm woods and polished brass.
What we love
Star Clipper and her sister ship Star Flyer certainly stand out from the crowd. In full sail she is an awe-inspiring sight, reminiscent on a bygone age, yet she combines this tradition with the comfort of a modern cruise line, ideal for those who wish to experience a tall ship cruise. Climb the mast or relax by the small pool, you can be as involved as you wish on this easy-going and friendly ship.
