River cruising is a fast-growing market, with substantial product development both in Europe and further afield. But as there is not standardised star rating system within this market, it is hard for the novice to judge what the quality will be without expert advice. As a rule of thumb however, higher prices suggest an enhanced hotel operation, with better crew/passenger ratios and superior food.

River boats have differing attractions and advantages – on some rivers, the appeal is that you dock right in the heart of great cities and picturesque towns; on others, there are just one or two key ports of call which serve as bases for sightseeing; whilst in certain areas leisurely days simply cruising through the countryside can give you a relaxed and unique insight into a country.
