Our insight

Alaska & the Rocky Mountains

An Alaska cruise offers opportunities to get up close to mighty glaciers, follow in the footsteps of fortune hunters in the great gold rush, hunt for whales bubble feeding in the icy waters and search out bears fishing for salmon as they journey upriver to their spawning grounds. Or if all that sounds like too much like hard work, relax on your balcony and witness the extraordinary scenery, with eagles soaring overhead.

There are a number of cruise lines that sail between Seward, reached by flying into Anchorage, and Vancouver so you have plenty of choice with small, medium and large ships. One of our favourites is Crystal Serenity which is positioned there between June and August in 2016 and 2017 before embarking on the fabled Northwest Passage route to New York. Accommodating 1070 guests, she offers fantastic balance, with an excellent selection of sightseeing excursions and plenty of dining and entertainment options. Large enough to give you plenty to do, but small enough that she doesn't overwhelm the intimate ports of call along the way.

We highly recommend that you combine your Alaska cruise with an extended land stay. If your embarkation is in Anchorage we recommend that you break the journey with at least a night in Seattle. Dinner in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Space Needle is worth it for the outstanding views and a morning visit to Pike Place Market is a must to see the catch of the day.

In Vancouver take a stroll in the beautiful Stanley Park, have dinner in trendy Gas Town, or visit one of the city's excellent galleries. In Vancouver you can join the Rocky Mountaineer on a choice of routes through the towering, snow-capped peaks. You'll travel through the wild beauty of Canada's West, via the quaint town of Kamloops to Jasper or Banff, or more unusually via the resort town of Whistler and Quesnel to Jasper. From your journey's end you'll then travel by road to Calgary for a return flight to the UK.

The Rocky Mountaineer offers two service levels and we highly recommend Gold Leaf. When booked on this service you'll enjoy a two level glass domed train coach with full-length windows, an exclusive dining room where you'll be served gourmet hot meals and complimentary beverages. Snacks are also served on board. You won't sleep on the train, instead disembarking and (on most itineraries) staying in rustic yet charming Kamloops before ending your journey with a stay in a more luxurious resort.

Rocky Mountaineer departures often coincide with cruise itineraries and we've put together a selection of these, offering a choice of routes and time in Vancouver. If you would like us to arrange alternative dates or different hotels it is our pleasure to adapt and extend each itinerary just for you.
